On my 7100, it can decode a 2 MB uuencoded file in about 5 seconds. Anything smaller than 128K will be decoded on a PPC instantaneously. Your mileage may vary. It has no User Interface, simply drop a MacBinary file on it and it will be decoded, drop any other file or folder on it and it will be encoded. MacBinary is a binary (non-text) format that encodes Macintosh files so that they can be safely stored or transfered through non-Macintosh systems. MacBinary combines the two forks of a Mac file, together with the file information (Name, Creator Application, File Type, etc) into a single binary data stream, suitable for storage on non-Mac systems. This application is just a quick (15 minute) hack that I did for my own use and then cleaned up a little for distribution. The purpose of the application is to first compress and then binhex files for electronic distribution. It is intended to be used as a drag and drop application. You can use it to choose files, but not folders, from the 'File' menu. After I had written this it turned out that DropoStuff (also part of Stuffit Deluxe package) also does this. I decided to go ahead and distribute it because lots of people have the Stuffit Engine as part of Stuffit SpaceSaver and... I made this program because I didn't like having to make an archive every time I wanted to compress a file, and because I don't want any more extensions clogging up my system. CoDec is FREE! To use - Drag your files, folders, or disks to the CoDec drop box icon. they will be compressed or decompressed automatically, as appropriate. If you double click a CoDec compressed document, it will be decompressed. The Progress window will display a progress bar that increments for each file processed. Click on the Cancel button to stop processing files. Requires System 7 and Thread Manager... While this is all-and-well, self-extracting archives add to the file sizes of files being transferred. While 10-20K for the self-extraction code isnt much, it rapidly adds up over multiple transfers. In addition, the use of self-extraction features on small files can often cause the file to be larger than the original, uncompressed file. DeSEA removes the self-extraction code from a self-extracting archive. DeSEA is currently configured for the three most popular compression programs - Compact Pro, Disk Doubler (pre-4.0 and 4.0), and StuffIt Classic/Deluxe as well as... It cannot compress files or create archives. For that, you must purchase the full DiskDoubler. The full command set has intentionally been left in this program so that you may see the features present in the regular version of DiskDoubler. This is very handy to have if someone gives you a file which was compressed with DD. You can binhex a file for uploading, or un-binhex a file that has been downloaded. There is also a Text filter option. Very handy for uploading to boards which require binhexed files. The intent was to write a program for the Mac with a Mac look and feel that would generate a CPIO archive which could then be uncompacted on a Unix machine. The inspiration behind this was things like SunTAR and the fact that I wanted to do this at work for archiving lots of Mac source code in a Unix format. MacCPIO archives are made by adding one one file at a time chosen from the standard Mac Open File dialog box. As it's selected, each file is both added to the growing CPIO archive and added to a scrolling list of files. The main window's title always shows the current archive's name and size. Even if you have not yet come across an ARJed file, YOU WILL, and you will want DeArj around when you do. DeArj is the ONLY Arj extractor made for the Macintosh. This version of DeArj is fully fuctional at DeArjing. But the upgrade will include the following - LARGE Speed Increases, Better User Interface, Ability to list files in an archive, Ability to extract only 1 file in an archive, Eventually the ability to compress.
